Himmelbjerget and Hjejlen
Himmelbjerget - one of our most famous local attractions - is only a few kilometers away from Birkhede Camping. Himmelbjerget played an important role as a gathering place for large public meetings at the end of the 1800s during the period when Denmark developed into a modern democracy.
At the top stands the tower commemorating the introduction of the constitution in 1849. From the top you can also enjoy the fantastic panorama of the lakes and the surrounding countryside all the way to both Silkeborg and Aarhus on sunny days. There are also plenty of good hiking and MTB trails in the area. - e.g. the Himmelbjergruten.
The steam boat Hjejlen - an absolute highlight
An absolute highlight when visiting Birkhede Camping is a boat trip on Hjejlen, the world's oldest original coal-fired paddle steamer still in operation. In the summer it sails from Silkeborg to Himmelbjerget and back.
Tour suggestions
Go by car, bike or on foot to Ry (3 km) and hop on the train to Silkeborg. Enjoy the beautiful boat trip from Silkeborg to Himmelbjerget. After visiting Himmelbjerget jump on one of the tour boats back to Ry, where your car/bike is waiting.
If you already went with Hjejlen from Silkeborg, we highly recommend a boat trip with Gl. Turisten from Ry to Himmelbjerget.
